Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
