Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
