Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
