TikTok Provides Users Control to Reduce AI-Generated Videos in Timelines

The platform is rolling out a new feature that enables them to reduce the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the company disclosed that it currently hosts in excess of 1 billion AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a global release. This advancement coincides with a rise in AI-generated material, driven by recent content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that almost a tenth of the most rapidly expanding channels on another major platform exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A significant portion of this output is considered low-quality AI content, a phrase for substandard, mass-produced content that is typically nonsensical or bizarre.

Based on user feedback that many people appreciate content made with AI tools, from digital art to educational videos, and we want to provide users the power to adjust the amount of that, according to their own likes,” said a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

The service shared that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its service tagged as AI-generated. In total, in excess of 100 million pieces of content are submitted to the app each day, making clips made by AI a minor part of its complete catalog.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be able to limit or boost the amount of artificial media they watch by accessing the topic control setting in the platform and choosing “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that are already be modified under the filter cover current affairs, clothing, cosmetics, and movement.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s rules require content makers to identify lifelike AI-made content, and it forbids harmful AI impersonations of public figures or emergencies. Any authentic-looking AI video that is without a tag can be taken down under its terms of service.

Furthermore, the platform will henceforth apply an AI-generated label to content created with its own AI tools, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This measure is designed to stop users from seeking to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is also introducing a $2m educational fund for specialists and organizations to produce learning resources about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will support non-profit groups specializing in teaching programming and robotics.

Platform Protection

The platform has defended its safety measures, during debate over proposals to make redundant hundreds of review team members in Britain. TikTok is planning to reduce a significant number of roles in its trust and safety department in its British office, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by automated systems.

A company official explained that people-led review would remain essential, but AI can shield workers by eliminating the most harmful content before it is viewed by humans. TikTok stated a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content seen by safety staff over the past year due to reliance on its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to integrate people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to harmful content as quickly as possible, which is why a lot of the machine support is really helping us work at speed.”
