Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Officers then found many other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Police say initial examinations indicate the substance was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to where it came from; officials are presently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the event," they added.
City officials announced they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the public for details.
A senior official said the vandalism rendered him stunned and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right attack five years ago," he posted on online, referring to the death of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
